Eating Healthier While Travelling

Eating while travelling tends to involve lots of oil, fat, sugar, sodium, and preservatives. But there are a couple of things that you can do to minimize the effects of eating on the go. I found some of these tips in an in-flight magazine, I forget the name…

1) Don’t skip breakfast, but don’t eat those free hotel “continental” breakfast donuts. Try something that is high in protein and fiber to stabilize your blood sugar levels, which will satsify your hunger and keep you from snacking on fries before lunch. A “healthy” cereal like Cheerios with some skim milk is good, oatmeal is better.

2) Drink water throughout the day and before you eat. This’ll keep you hydrated and help prevent overeating. I always stop off at a grocery store or even a convenience store before going to the hotel, and stock up on bottled water. I hate hotel tap water, and I hate paying $1.95 a bottle more. .

3) Look for foods that are grilled, baked, or steamed, because they are prepared with less oil (aka fat).

4) Ask for salad dressings, sauces, or toppings to be placed on the side. This way you can better control what you eat, or at least know much of it you ate. 5) Order the smaller sizes of menu items. Portion control is key. Often buying the kid’s meals gives you a decent sized meal at an affordable price. Even if it says for children 12 and under on the menu, I’ve never had a waitperson deny me the food.

Now, did I follow any of these tips while at DisneyWorld? No. Well, I didn’t skip breakfast, but I ate eggs and bacon! I’m almost embarrassed to post an update, but I will…
