This is going to be hard.
I woke up this morning, as usual, groggy and un-caffeinated. I brush my teeth, stumble into the kitchen, and like a reflex, pour myself a bowl of Fruit Loops. Gahh! At least I’ve recently switched to skim milk, but still. A 1 cup serving of fruit loops has 120 calories, but 15g of sugars. I was supposed to eat some Quaker Minute-Oats, which has 150 calories per 1/2 (dry) serving, but has only 1g of sugar and 4g of dietary fiber. What exactly those numbers mean I don’t know, but I realized that eating healthier will be like curing an addiction, and breaking all of these 26-year old habits will be hard. I will surely miss those sugary, fluorescent O’s.
…Here is a good guide to reading food package labels, and it tells you what is legally meant by terms like “reduced-fat” or “low”-fat or “healthy”. Apparently, they use Fruit Loops in their section named “Anatomy of a Junk Label”. Doh.

nice site - congrats on a great start! soon you’ll be reaching for the oats without thinking about it… i eat oatmeal all the time and it’s great! oats + water + salt + raisins + splash of cold skim milk after it’s done == YUM. today i threw in some vanilla protein powder which worked splendidly. you probably know this but in case you don’t, the oats have a much lower GI and higher fiber content than fruit loops. this means that your body digests them slower and you avoid the crash and burn insulin spikes that come with sugary food. that’s less sugar to get stored as FAT. if you’re still having trouble getting used to oats, try adding other fruits to it. i bet cinnamon and apple is tasty. just don’t add refined sugar! you can do it!!
