April Monthly Health Goal: Gym Memberships Review

Ok, so I’ve gone and checked out the two gyms within a 10-15 minute drive from my place. Here are my results:

24-Hour Fitness Review

Time to drive: 5-10 minutes depending on traffic.
First impressions: They did a 15-minute interview about my current eating and exercising habits, and then proceeded to weigh me and determine my body fat percentage using the skinfold test. Finally, they tried to sign me up to one of their memberships. They were eager, but not overly pushy, which was good.
Facilities: Good amount of exercise, cardio, and free-weights, along with classes. Pool + Basketball court supposedly in 2006.
Cost: For both my wife and I: $250 startup + $55/month, or $1260 all upfront for 3 years (works out to $35/month), then $99/yr after that.

YMCA Review

Time to drive: 10-15 minutes
First impressions: Friendly staff, no interview, just a tour of the facilities, which were pretty expansive. No pressure at all.
Facilities:G ood amount of exercise, cardio, and free-weights. Pool, Basketball Court, Raquetball/Squash Courts, Indoor and Outdoor Tracks, Classes.
Cost: No startup fees, $100/month for wife and I.

Conclusions? I don’t know yet. Both are a bit pricey, and we might be having some extra financial burdens soon.
