Sunday 9/18 Weigh-In

212 lbs. Ugh. I hate not making progress. Do not pass Go, do no collect $200. I am thinking of switching gyms to one that has an indoor pool, I am getting tired of jogging and my arches are starting to hurt. I might have to look into orthotics or some better running shoes. But I don’t like the idea of spending $100 on shoes anymore. My jump rope is still in the original packaging too. Very disappointed right now.

Stress and Weight Gain

I’m back from a week or so of eating out and often, but the damage isn’t so bad. I’m back up to 212 lbs. We’ll see what I can do about that after hitting the gym today. Apparently stress encourages weight gain, I used to think stressed out people would eat less and lose weight. Per this About.com article,

The so-called “stress hormone” cortisol is released in the body during times of stress… Cortisol has many actions in the body, and one ultimate goal of cortisol secretion is the provision of energy for the body. The end result of these actions is an increase in appetite… with the end result being weight gain or difficulty losing unwanted pounds. Experts agree that stress management is a critical part of weight loss regimens… Exercise is the best and fastest method for weight loss in this case.

I guess that makes sense. Back on the saddle I go.

Hiatus

As I mentioned in my other blog, I will be unexpectedly out of town for the next several days. I will try to watch what I eat, but we’ll see what happens. Airplane food, yech. Actually, these days they don’t even give you a meal. Better bring some granola bars. Keep on being healthy everyone!

Jumping Rope

jump ropeBought a jump rope today on impulse at Target. I was actually looking at the Yoga mats in order to do some exercises at home, but they were $25 for thin sheet of plastic, and then I saw the jump ropes on clearance for $1.60. I’m going to try and incorporate 10 minutes of jump rope on the days that I don’t go to the gym. Hopefully that will also add some spice to my routine. Did you know there is a Jump Rope Institute, and a United States Amateur Jump Rope Federation?

Recent Exercise:
Today - 1 hr Walking
Yesterday - 30-min walking + 20 minutes jogging

September 2005 Health Status / Weight Update

9/05 Weight - 210 lbsIt’s the first Sunday of the month, time for my monthly update and fat pictures. Well, I re-started my weight loss journey on August 18th, and have lost 3 lbs. for a current weight of 210 lbs. I’m exercising more regularly and ramping things up slowly, and have been reading numerous other diet and exercise blogs to help keep me motivated. So far so good!

As part of my monthly updates, I will also be taking pictures of my torso for those ever-popular Before & After pictures. I will lovingly be calling them my “fat pictures”. I’ve tried to not suck anything in.Warning: Fat pics ahead…

We can rebuild him. We have the technology.

Six Million Dollar ManI pushed myself extra hard today, in preparation for my weigh-in tomorrow. Ok, I admit it - I cheated and weighed myself today: 211 lbs. I really wanted to lose another pound this week, I don’t know if it will have overnight (literally). But we’ll see. But man am I sore! My quads are really burning. My friend remarked that muscle soreness means you made little tears in your muscle fibers, and after they heal you’ll be stronger than before, like calluses on your hand. Hmm, I never thought of that way, I thought it just lactic acid build-up. I’ll have to ask one of the personal trainers guys next time I go. I feel like the Six Million Dollar Man

“Steve Austin, Astronaut - A man barely alive . . . Gentlemen, we can rebuild him . . . we have the technology. We have the capability to make the world’s first bionic man. Steve Austin will be that man. Better than he was before, Stronger, Faster . . .”

Evaluating My Cholesterol Test Results

Cholesterol BombI had my cholesterol tested recently and just got my results back. I found this reference on WebMD to help me figure out what it all meant. I talked briefly with my doctor about it over the phone, but he basically said what the website said, and that I should try to control it with diet and exercise first, and not medication.

Total cholesterol
Less than 200 mg/dL is desirable.
200 mg/dL to 239 mg/dL is borderline high.
240 mg/dL and above is high.

My total cholesterol was 215, so I am borderline high. This worries me since I am still under 30. My heart is already starting to clog?

Caramel Frappacino… Light?

caramel_frap.jpgThe Grande Caramel Frappacino. Creamy, sweet, and just enough kick to finish off the work day at noon. This is what happens when you have lunch with a co-worker… As I order my Caramel Frap, I remark how I shouldn’t be drinking this. The cashier kindly suggests a Light Frappacino. Light Frap? Oxymoron, I say. But she insists that it tastes just as good and has less than half the calories. So I tried it. Verdict? You can tell it’s been dietized, but it’s still pretty good.

Of course, as soon as I get home I verify this info at the nutritional information part of Starbucks.com:

Regular Grande Caramel Frap* - 280 calories, 3.5 grams of fat.
Light Grande Caramel Frap* - 180 calories, 1.5 grams of fat.

Not quite half the calories, but considering the regular frap comes with whipped cream by default, and the light does not, I guess that’s a fair assessment. Well, I’m definitely not getting the whipped cream ever again! And if it’s not for some sort of personal reward, I’ll be sticking to the Light Frappacinos when I have a willpower deficit.

* both without whipped cream. Adding whipped cream adds 150 calories and 12.5 grams of fat!! It’s good, but not that good.

New Look… Now for the New Me

Instead of blogging the last couple of days, I’ve been tinkering with this website. The redesign was inspired by the 3-column formats of LifeHacker, Blog Herald, The Daily Bite, and Jalopnik . I have very limited html skills, so please let me know if I broke something (very likely).
