Sunday 8/28 Weigh-In: 210 lbs.

Holy crap. Maybe it’s working. I weighed in this morning at 210 lbs, down from 211 last week. I know they say losing 1-2 lbs. per week is sustainable, so here’s hoping! Gonna go play around at the beach again today for my exercise.

Dating Service For Beautiful People… Only

Speaking of trying to get fit and look better, I just ran across BeautifulPeople.net, a dating website that is ONLY for “beautiful people”, as voted on by others. You have to submit a picture of yourself, be judged to see of you are up to par, then you get permission to pay for their service. Talk about some serious ego-stroking. Supposedly something like 20,000 people have applied, with only 2,000 current members. Count me… out.

Exercise Today
Only 30 minute walk w/ dog

Pets Make You Healthier?

I think so. Ever since I got my dog I walk at least a half hour every day and have gotten to see basically my entire neighborhood by foot in a 1 mile radius. I lived in suburbia for 10 years and never did that! Also, I tend to go out more, if only to throw my dog in the ocean and see how he likes it (He likes it a lot.). I’ve gone on hikes, gone to the beach, and visited lots of local parks, all because of my trusty spaniel.

Exercise Today:
1 hour running and playing with my dog at the beach.

Eating Slower With Friends

Another diet tip I’ve read about is to eat slower. Eating slower means you’ll feel full while you’ll have eaten less food since it takes a while for your food to hit your stomach and your brain to sense fullness. I am guilty of this for sure. I eat fast, and am often bloated when done, since when I feel full I’ve already eaten too much and half my meal is still in my esophagus.

The way many books say to counter this is to eat with friends. Since you’ll be presumably talking with your buddies, you’ll eat slower, and thus less. The problem is, eating out with friends means… eating OUT. Which means restaurant food, which means fattier and greasier food.

Drinking Water to Lose Weight

One of the best tips I’ve heard about eating less is to drink lots of water. I must refill by Brita pitcher three times a day now at least. I really like the taste of (filtered) water, and it does fill you up more and get you to drink less soda, juice, etc. However, drunk alone it definitely doesn’t fool my stomach into thinking I already ate. My stomach still grumbles when it’s hungry. But if eaten in conjunction with food, it does a pretty good job of making me feel full sooner, which lets me eat less.

Exercise Recently:
Today: 30 minute walk with dog, some pushups
Yesterday: also 30 minute walk with dog, some pushups

Why shouldn’t I eat at night?

You always hear that you shouldn’t eat late at night. Why is that? Is it just because you usually don’t do too much after dinner, so the food calories won’t get burned immediately? Nope. It turns out, this is mostly a myth. In the end, it’s all about how many calories you burn overall versus how many calories you ingest. There is no magic time that your body starts turning food into fat.

However, if eating late at night equates to a 4th meal, or a really big dinner, then that equals more calories which obviously leads to more chubbiness.

Exercise Today:
Treadmill jogging @ gym, 30 minutes, 321 calories burned per FitDay. In and out, very efficient.

How often should I weigh myself?

Now that I am exercising and should (hopefully) expect to see some changes in my weight, how often should I weigh myself? After doing some searching, it seems like all the dieticians and personal trainers recommend to do it weekly, at the same time after the same day every week. This is due to natural variations in your weight due to time of day, water retention, what we just ate, etc. Also, if you’re being nitpicky about a few pounds, try to be wearing the same amount of clothes. Or none at all. Ha.

So I’m going with Sunday morning, when I wake. That should be in 8 hours. And I’m going to take my “fat pictures” starting up again the first Sunday of each month.

First Day at the Gym

My first day at the gym went pretty well, it was nice and air conditioned. I didn’t feel too fat, there was a good mix of very fit people and regular people. I guess it was also the weekend. I did 30 minutes of jogging on the treadmill while watching TV, and then 15-20 minutes of trying out all the weight resistance-type machines. Didn’t push too hard so I don’t get too sore and quit or something stupid like that. I haven’t decided whether I should just shower at the gym afterwards.

Exercise:
Treadmill jogging, 30 minutes, 321 calories burned per FitDay.
Weights, medium, for 15 minutes, 46 calories burned per FitDay
